Welcome to the newest addition to the Georgia High School Helmet Project. After talking with a friend about some of the older schools that don't exist anymore for one reason or another, I decided it would be good to display the helmets of those now defunct teams. I've debated on how best to approach this because I know the information for schools that no longer exist is going to be hard to come by. I'm surely gonna have to depend on the folks that attended these schools in hopes they can help me out.
The internet is a great resource, but most of the teams I'll be dealing with here were gone way before the internet arrived. Taking that into consideration, very little if anything in the way of a helmet design or picture would be available on the world wide web. Old yearbooks would be the ideal resource for finding what I need. If your school is now defunct and you would like to see your old high school helmet displayed, contact me through email at davidh@footballfridaynight.com and I'll be happy to create the image and post it. Rather than trying to post a brief history of the team, I am in the process of linking the helmets to the recently discovered Georgia High School Football Historians Association web site. They have some great information over there. So there's no use in me trying to re-invent the wheel so to speak. Each helmet will be linked to the ghsfha.org website in one way or the other. If the ghsfha doesn't have specific information for a team that I have displayed, you will still be taken to their site. Here you will have the opportunity to share any information you have for your team with other fans. They have plenty of forums available for discussion.
I don't plan on going back any further than 1960, but I'll have to wait and see what kind of interests it sparks and then I'll be able to tell a little more about where I want to go with it. I'm not going to worry too much about the regions they competed in because they have changed so much over the years. Like any other school, helmet designs change constantly. I feel like the last helmet worn would be the one most people remember and that's what I would like to display. But, if I can't get a helmet from the last year they competed, I'll settle for what I can get. If you can help me in anyway, I would greatly appreciate it!
